A Step by Step Guide to Being Successful
At PTC, we hear it all the time. “Why isn’t my website successful?” or “Why am I not getting any business?” It’s seems like a simple question to ask, but it’s very complex. There is no “one” reason as to why you are not successful in your business. One of the main issues is that people are not accepting of their own failures. They believe it is some outside force causing them to fail and that the outside force is happy to see them fail. That they didn’t want you to succeed. Seriously? Not only is this harmful to your business, but it’s harmful to yourself.
It’s not that people around you don’t want you to succeed, it’s often the lack of dedication to success that is causing the problem. People all want to succeed and they all want people around them to succeed. Reaching out to blame everyone but yourself is a common reaction. But, it couldn’t be more harmful to success.
We at PTC have to come up with the kinds of responses that are delicate but to the point. We have a simple formula for success that anyone can use. We reiterate these over and over and you should too. Don’t consider any other options since there are no other solutions possible. It’s no one’s fault but your own, so own it, accept it, and fix it.
Take the steps necessary for success. If you haven’t read these before, read them. If you have, read them again. Just to reiterate, here are the Six Steps to Success. If you follow these, you will be successful.
1. Find something
Find one thing and focus on it entirely. There are many things people like to do and many things that we are even good at. But, not all of them are things we can do on a daily basis in way of work. It shouldn’t be work. It should be fun to do. It should be something you love to do and could spend all your time on if you had all the time to do it. Finding that one thing that is a good balance between something you love to do and something you can make a living at is a good choice but not the only choice. The truth is that people can make money at almost anything, so that shouldn’t be the criteria. Some things are just harder to make a living at unless you are really the best at it.
2. Be the Best at IT
It’s not only about finding something you like to do and focusing on it but about being good at it. It’s something you have to work at. Educate yourself and become the best you can be in what you’ve decided to focus on. Showing people that you have gone through the process of educating yourself is important. Get a degree or a certification to show that you are the Best at what you are doing. People want to have people working for them who are the best at what they do. They’ll pay good money for it.
3. Work Hard
Try your hardest to be someone people want to have working for them. If you work hard at what you are doing, people can see that. Don’t goof off but don’t be too serious either. Having fun while working is important but don’t get distracted from achieving the goals you have set forth. Make sure to work toward those goals and get them done in time.
4. Budget Time
Budget your time so that you have time to work and time to play. When you’re working, work hard, but when you’re done working, be done working. One of the things that make everyone go through life is that they have time to enjoy life outside of work. Work should be something you enjoy, but it should also be something you can take a break from and enjoy something else for a while. These other things could be hobbies or socializing or whatever, but they shouldn’t be work. Budget time to get away from work but budget time to work as well. You need to make sure that you set goals and meet those goals in a timely manner. Budget your time and meet those deadlines for things to be done. Don’t be late. Nobody likes someone who is late in anything. All you do by being late is show those you have given a timeline to that you don’t care about their time which shows a lack of caring. Nobody likes that person.
5. Budget Money
Keep close tabs on where you spend your money. Don’t worry about how much you’re making but focus on how much you are spending. Spend less and save more. Saving money for the future is important, but spending a little on yourself is also important. Save as much as you can without indulging too much. You should indulge yourself occasionally, but not too often. It really depends on your budget, but you can’t overspend and you need to prioritize items. Set aside money for prioritized items. There are a number of things you have to have money for: food, housing, electricity, phone, TV, whatever. You need to look at how much money you make and decide how that is going to be spent. Apportion how much is necessary spending and how much you will have remaining after you’ve budgeted the amounts for necessities. The rest should be saved aside from what you will need for a little spending towards enjoyment of life. Don’t forget to spend money on some of that. It’s as important as having time set aside.
6. Smile
The world is a reflection of you. It’s like a mirror. The more you smile, the more the world smiles back at you. How many times have you walked into a room with a bad attitude and you immediately get bad attitude back from those around you? It’s not their fault. They are only reacting to the way you are acting. It’s a reflection of you. If you walk in to a room and laugh out loud, everyone in the place will begin to smile if not laugh along with you. It’s the way we are. We can’t help but want to be a part of the joke. It’s also true that we can’t help but be part of the anger or sadness around us. We just can’t avoid it. If you decide to smile, you’ll find the world will smile with you.
That’s it. If you dedicate yourself to the steps to success, you will succeed. Guaranteed! And, if you show people how you are dedicated to your own success, you will see clearly how dedicated those around you are to your success. In some respects, people are blinded by a lack of focus. Focus on that one thing and focus fully. Success will follow.
