Solar Heats Up
With two upcoming votes in Florida on the future of Solar Energy, the argument over how energy is produced and used in the home is heating up. Building Net Zero Energy homes depends largely on the use of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Panels established on the roof of each home tied to the local electric grid in order to achieve a Net Metered Electric usage of Zero, thus Net Zero Energy. Where do we go from here? Each and every one of you holds the key. Use your VOTE. The use of Solar in the home in order to achieve Net Zero Energy has been encouraged through several past beneficial legislative decisions including the concept of Net Metering.
You can find out more about this at one of Parker Associates’ client builders, TerraWise Homes (www.terrawisehomes.com), who promotes themselves as Jacksonville’s only Net Zero Energy builder. Upcoming votes in Florida in August (Amendment 4) and November (Amendment 1) specifically are addressing the Net Zero Energy homes. TerraWise Homes’ founder, David Shacter, is encouraging everyone to Vote “Yes” in August and “No” in November to keep the use of Solar flourishing and moving forward.
A vote “FOR” Amendment 4 supports providing tax exemptions for solar power and other renewable energy equipment included in home values, commercial properties, and industrial properties for property taxes.
A vote “AGAINST” Amendment 1 opposes the addition of the right to own or lease solar equipment and the protection of laws preventing subsidization of solar energy to the constitution.
What is Net Zero?
To build truly Net Zero Energy Homes, TerraWise Homes builds energy efficient homes with Net-Zero features that deliver real savings to homeowners and Green Building options that help the environment.
The PhotoVoltaic Solar Energy Systems from TerraWise Homes offer “Net Metering.” This type of metering allows utility customers to offset some or all of their energy use with self-produced renewable energy. Net metering works by utilizing a meter that is able to spin and record energy flow in both directions. The meter spins forward when a customer is drawing power from the utility grid (i.e. using more energy than they are producing) and spins backward when energy is being sent back to the grid. At the end of a given month, the customer is billed only for the Net Energy used.
What makes Net Metering systems so beneficial, besides offsetting a home’s energy consumption with a renewable source, is that excess energy sent to the utility can be sold back at the retail price. Usually any surplus energy is credited on the customer’s account toward the next billing cycle. If at the end of the billing cycle, a surplus remains, the customer is paid, or credited, for the difference.
This simple system is low-cost and easily administered. The program allows customers to maximize the value of their electricity production. In Jacksonville Florida, the JEA offers PhotoVoltaic Metering credits. Click here for more information from JEA.
This type of Integrated Photovoltaic (PV) Solar System, combined with Net Metering, allows a home to become its own mini power plant. Added to a comprehensive energy efficient construction practice, homeowners can achieve true Net-Zero Energy Homes.
The easiest way to find out about net metering opportunities in your area is to ask an experienced staff member at TerraWise Homes. Contact TerraWise Homes to learn more about this exciting aspect of Net-Zero Energy Homes.
Whatever your position on Solar, use your Vote. We recommend Voting Yes on Amendment 4 in August and No on Amendment 1 in November.
